Postcards to and.. from Kelly

There was a surprise in the mail bag today as we were sorting the letters and parcels – yes, I’m working at the post office – with the arrival of another post card.
This one had very familiar writing with the exuberant ‘happy I’m on holidays’ vibe about it. Gee thanks Kel.
Kelly has gone on a well deserved and much-needed break and it’s taking two of us to fill her shoes. The locals have made all the jokes and poking fun at us about taking over nad staging a coup. Yeah, I don’t think so.

It’s certainly been a learning curve for many things, but the basics of customer service are still there. Plus, the locals all know one or both of us which does make it easier. As I know from my days with Hallmark and training my replacement, there are so many things we store in our head that getting them out for training purposes can be hard.
I am slowly getting to know new people. I could put names with mail boxes, but not names to faces. I found my training must be sinking in, a person was mentioned the other day in conversation and immediatly I thought to myself ‘box #such and such’. That has happened since college when I started dreaming and answering (in my head) in Italian.

Aside from Kelly’s there are a few other postcards, including one from my parents who have just returned from their trip overseas.

If you can spare a few dollars and the few minutes it takes, please help Kelly fill her wall with psotcards from around the world. You don’t have to be on holiday, just one from your home town is perfect. If it’s not Woodbridge, Tasmania then it’s good for posting.
Let’s see where else we can ‘visit’.

All systems go…

As my pork slowly cooks to become a tender and juicy meal I have sometime to ponder the week that was and the week that will be.

It all started on Saturday when mum and dad arrived back from their overseas holiday. Mr 9 wanted to have a welcome home party so while hubby and I were collecting them, Mr 14 baked a cake. I ‘entertained’ them while the boys went and decorated their house.
To say they were surprised is an understatement, and it was also to celebrate dad’s birthday which he had while they were away.
As a thank you for looking after their house and doing a few things for them I got a cool retro looking tin of Irish toffee. It’s not a problem.

Yesterday, mum asked me to come and see her. And gave me another pressie. Wow. Check out the best PINK bag. Love it. Awesome, thanks mum!! It’s go a zipper and a flat bottom so is more stable and secure. Comfy handles and an inside pocket for the phone. And it was wrapped in to pink a paper. Brilliant!

And so roomy too. This will definitely be a favourite. Camera, iPad and wallet. Easy.

Sunday was spent with mum at the Craft Fair on its last day here in Hobart, – where I spent a few dollars on some yummy craft items, beads and a book – and then hubby and the kids met me at a friends house for a visit while we delivered a car for loan.

This week has been spent too-ing and fro-ing, some training (in a minute folks) and getting ready for a busy weekend.
There is baking (apple crumble and pizza bases) to be done for an afternoon and dinner with friends on Saturday.
Sunday will be a family get together with my sister and her family and parents. The tables have been booked and I shall be taking my camera with the plan to get some cool pictures. For a birthday celebration or two… (Hubby had his this week).
The weather has been cool and a little wet but is clearing for the weekend so fingers crossed it stays that way.

Next week I’ll be back in paid employment for the five days, (hence the training) which means along with everything else, I’ll be pretty tired – mentally more than physically – I know I know, loads of women do this every day. I’ve just had it easy been a SAHM for too long.
A friend is taking a holiday and there will be two of us taking her place. So between 8 and 5 or thereabouts, I shall be busy. Problem. Term holidays start this Friday and hubby leaves for work on Monday morning, so I have to arrange something for the boys. Let’s see. I think there might be dinner to cook and washing to do and Mr 9 will be sorted with a few friends. I hope.
And when I get home, I may not be in the mood to write anything, or I may not even have anything to write.

The second week of holidays though, I have things planned. A movie day where we all want to watch our own thing (Monsters University, Superman and Pacific Rim) the museum which has been revamped and reopened, catch up with a friend or two, and I’m sure there are few other activities we can organise.

It’s the sort of busy where you are ready to drop and then it just keeps on coming. And the only issue I have with this at this point. Hubby has to leave at stupid o’clock. So getting up at 4, off to the airport, home in time to have breakfast (will be required today more than ever) and a (STRONG) coffee then head to work. And Monday is the busiest day of the week. Wondering if anyone has an IV they don’t mind lending me to drip feed the caffeine…..
I’m not too good at getting up that early and surviving, so I hope my second wind kicks in early, 9am would be good.
The one day I want a decent sleep, and woah, interrupted. At least it doesn’t happen every week, and it wasn’t his choice to make it that early, work plans changed that were out of our control.

In between all the nothingness I feel like I’ve done this week I have been watching the remainder of the first season of Arrow. Love it!! (worth it for the eye candy alone) I don’t watch a lot of tele, but this is one I am loving. I’m gonna miss it when we’re done. But I’ll still have Under the Dome and Elementary to keep me going.

My year in a post. Or a nutshell.

And so it is nearly time for this year to end and a new one to begin.
This year has been busy.
I’ll try and get it altogether. In some kind of chronological order where I can.

– The start of the year gave me a 13 and 8 year old, right at the start of school (as always, and very bad timing in our behalf).

– my friend from the U.S (Oregon) came to visit for two weeks. We met through Facebook (a beady page no less) and a wonderful friendship followed. While we had spoken several times on the phone, it is still nerve wracking to meet in real life and wonder if we will get on just as well. We should not have worried. All went well, and we had a ball doing some travelling round my beautiful state – well, we started, but didn’t get very far. Oh well, plenty more the next trip. My trip to the States is in progress…. Can’t wait.

– hubby moved job location from Western Australia back to Queensland where we had moved from 8 months earlier. A good move, closer to us in travelling time, and much easier with the time difference and phone calls.

– I started training in April for an 8k fun run in May setting my goal of under an hour. The Mother’s Day classic. Walk or run and have fun. I was pretty happy with my result on 5 weeks training and while I only just made it, I did it in 58 mins. I the promptly made another goal of cutting 10 mins of it for next years race. Smart. Not so sure.

– September brought about a 16th birthday and a Learners drivers licence, October, 18 years of marriage and November, Mr 16 finished his high school years.

– my blogging and Facebook friends have proven loyal and wonderful people. It may sound strange, but some of them I trust more of them more than people I know in real life.

– fitness and health wise. Ho hum. There were a few weird girly issues which seem to be under control now, but which turned me into super bitch and turned our life upside down for a bit. Fitness was hit and miss after the fun run, and then I kicked it up a notch, in September sometime. Not sure how much I lost, but my shape changed and I started to feel much better, mentally, physically and emotionally. By the second week of December, I had run out of steam and this month has been more miss than hit with gym attendance. I will be back with a vengeance next week.
The best part is that I am still healthy and none of us has been in hospital for anything major.

– hubby has done a short work block overseas, and will be doing more in the new year. A fantastic opportunity for him and a definite step in the direction he wants to go in. (While very happy for him I had a moment of jealousy as I never thought he’d get his passport before me…we both had to laugh at that one)

– family came to visit over Christmas and it was fantastic to see my brother and his family again. I had only seen them briefly 2 years before. So this was a great catch up. And he is a fantastic dad. My sister to stay as well with her 3 kids minus partner, so my house swelled beyond shape.

– Christmas was with my kids, parents and my brother. A lovely relaxed day. Boxing Day brought the arrival of my Aunt (to mum and dads place), my sister and then a surprise trip the airport to pick up hubby.

– I have shared many pictures, food adventures, and the fun days we spend as a family.

I look forward to an exciting new year, there are lots of things planned and goals to fill. The first one, Mr 16’s trip to Qld on his own to visit his friend. Leaving on New Years Day.

Hope your year has been a good one, and you behave reasonably well over the new year period.
See you next year!

Saturday G & T Post

No, I am not talking about the alcoholic beverage. Not a fan, well of the T part anyway. I’m talking about Gratitude and Thanks. I’m changing it ever so slightly. But are they not the same in essence anyway?

This week has been busy beyond busy which is fine. I can deal with that. But on Tuesday a curve ball came hurtling my way and I had trouble – at least on that day – keeping hold of it.
Most of the time when things go astray I re adjust what I have to do to accommodate it and move on. It was really hard to do that this week. Mainly because it was a very personal and emotional curve ball.

Hubby ended up in hospital instead of coming home. I was a emotional wreck. I felt useless. I was the longest day either of us have had for a long time. If he was in Hobart, that makes it easy to deal with, I would have been there with him. Even if the morphine didn’t allow him to notice.
So my G & T for this is that he was still in the hotel and not midway into the first leg of his flight when the pain hit. He was transported and well looked after. I was looked after by my friends.

I am extremely G & T for the maturity my son showed on the prospect of end of school parties and not wanting to attend. While we weren’t going to say no to him going, we are happy that he made that decision himself.

I am G & T for hubby and that he is who he is. Would I be here otherwise??? Seriously. I love that he loves is job. It would be selfish of me to ask him to do anything else.
Loving his job, and always seeking out more knowledge has now afforded him a fantastic opportunity where he is currently doing some work overseas. Yep, the last 3 weeks has also been about him getting his passport and getting ready for a new adventure.

This may ruffle some feathers, and is slightly political, but I am grateful that I live in Australia.
The last major gun issue we had was 16 years ago at Port Arthur. America unfortunately has had several ‘high profile’ (as in everyone now knows) shooting rampages in just a few months. Now I know nothing of your whole freedom to carry arms etc but I feel a hell of a lot safer here knowing that some loony is not going to suddenly jump out with a gun. Very simplistic yes, but I feel that the more weapons that are available the more issues you are likely to have. Even though, as in most cases, it is just a few who ruin it for the rest of the well behaved population.

In memory and love for all those families whose loved ones are not returning, and for the family of the lost soul who couldn’t take it anymore. RIP ❤
