It’s Mother’s Day

It’s Sunday here in Australia and Mother’s Day. I’m not getting any presents. No meals will be prepared for me today. I will still be doing household things, and making sure everything is ready for school tomorrow.
I love my mum and everything she has done for the four us kids. I have nothing but admiration for single parents, yes parents. Even single dads who have mostly/all custody have to be mum sometimes. Especially if they have daughters.

Today though I have a different take on it. Mother’s day isn’t about presents and material things. It is about the being of a being a mother. It’s how I feel about being a mother. Especially now they’re teens.

Mother’s day is everyday my kids talk to me. Without grunting.
Mother’s day is every day they smile and high-five me.
Mother’s Day is everyday they let me hug them, without the grumbling.
Mother’s Day is every time they thanks me for something.
Mother’s Day is the odd times they do things, completely without being asked.
Mother’s day is everyday they wake up, healthy, and reasonably happy.
Mother’s Day is every day knowing I have raised pretty cool kids.
Mother’s day is everyday when we poke fun at each other, and still laugh about it.
Mother’s day is everyday.

Fun Run get fit time…

Three weeks ago I made the call to do the Mother’s Day Classic, the 8 km fun run.  Rather, I opened my big mouth and said “I’m doing the 8k run..” WT..??? Did I say that? Really.  Well, there it is. Out.  Even when I was registering I could have made it the 4k run, but no, I had said 8 so the 8 it was.
I have a thing for running – during High school it was my thing.  Anything over 400m was my race, and the longer the better, although we only went to 1500m where I was.  That or the cross-country.  Granted I have not done much since High School.

Anyway, so there is just over two weeks left and how have I been going?
The first few times I realised just how unfit I am.
If you remember the post about the treadmill (here) then you may well be thinking that I am fit as a fiddle and can run for miles and miles.  Well after that post, life got in the way, friends came to visit, we went away, life got in the way again.. and I haven’t really been on the treadmill or anywhere else for that matter since.

My aim here was to get a picture and make some smart remark about whipping me into shape and doing silly drawings to enhance it. Bah. That fell in a heap…

My first few runs were pretty pathetic but I have improved, not a great deal, but I’m definitely better.
I asked a couple of fitness gurus (one of them was Sarah of The Healthy Diva) to give me a few pointers on what is the best way to attack this challenge.

The results of that were pretty well the same – this is good – :
interval training – on a time or distance ratio,
combining both inside and outside work,
keep the body guessing (swap and change the routine and workouts)
as well as some strength exercises.
And always finish with stretches, which I do anyway.  Found out the hard way months ago, that not stretching after a 5k walk results in not being able to move the next day.

So with a 3k run yesterday done and hitting the gym tomorrow I think I might actually do this thing.
There are moments though where I have doubt on having bitten off too much, will I be able to do and not look like a twit.

what I'd like to look like when I run...

This brings me to another point we talked about, which was what I expected out of the run.

A: run more than I walk.
B: finish the race.
C: have no injuries before, during or after the race.
D: to be decided on the day… maybe I check my watch and try to beat a certain time, ‘race’ a few people to the finish line…. whatever I decide as things pan out.

My goal is to finish within an hour.  And given I have never done this before I am not sure about how realistic this is… but know it’s more than achievable, for someone like me.

My only hope is that with another 2+ weeks of training my body will remember what it used to do in High school and things will fall into place on the day.

and she does it!

What challenge like this have you done? Did it work out?

keep up the hard work 🙂

Running, beads and pink pajamas.

Ok, never mind the pink pajamas. That was just a throw in. but I did buy some – totally gorgeous!!

My sister arrives tomorrow afternoon/evening for at least the 4 days of Easter, maybe a few days longer.  Three kids (1, 5 & 9) + partner in tow with the car loaded full of all the necessary items we feel are needed for a weekend away.
I make and blog my Hot Cross Good Friday and then will most likely have a break – unless I get the chance to post a quickie picture from my phone that is.

interesting but pointless picture just coz I can.

My week in a nutshell:

– One son at camp made for a slightly quieter house – the other two made up for it though.

– I tidied my bead desk! (yay, now I can see it, for a short time anyway) and have started on some more bits and pieces.  As I type this, I am taking a break from the beads.  I have trouble with a certain application and I have to step away sometimes.

– Running…. eeek!  Those of you that read this post, might think that I am now fit and toned and my worrying is useless.  Hahaha. ~insert much guffawing on my part here~ Well, since I made that post I think I have been back, maybe, twice.  I have been so busy and really haven’t made an effort to include this in my day.  Anyhoo, the Mother’s Day Classic is back.  It’s a fun run/walk on Mother’s Day for survivors  (and their family/friends and anyone else who wants to join in) of Breast Cancer.  Mum sent me the email and asked if I would like to bring the boys and join her this year.  Yes!  This will be blogged about in more detail later.  I am now accountable to you all having said this.

– I have two markets planned (aside from my usual one). One on the 15th and another the first week of May.  Hence the new makes.  I need to get some material out and make more bags.  I bought this awesome pink lacy bra with flowers on it that would make a gorgeous evening bag….hmm, we’ll go there another day maybe.

– Hubby is spending Easter with his parents and one sister – lucky boys (BIL and Dad) are going the races on Saturday night.  Speedway.

– My parents celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary.

– my nails are coming along nicely (really, you want to know this why???).  Since having polish on then I can see where they have grown.  Mind you, it’s only bare millimetres, but grow they have.  I can now tap fingers on the bench and make that cool sound.
Some things are awkward though – picking up beads and texting is getting weird, and the stuff I get underneath them… forever seem to be peeling tiny bits of fruit or veg skin off. Hmm.

– Don’t forget my sale on over at Marcato Designs (40% off atm). Come grab a bargain!

hope you’re all having a dandy day and keep smiling ,
if you’re not, ‘fake it til you make it’

Jennifer 🙂
