Ok, so this will be a super quick post as I am seriously tired, having had barely 10hrs sleep since I left Sydney.
We took a trip to the Grand Canyon today – if you haven’t been you really have to make the time to get there.
In a few words, because I cannot even begin to describe it in much less than a dictionary’s worth.
Wow. Beautiful. Incredible. Breath takingingly amazing.
At every turn there was a new vista to see, a new angle on the scene before you. As the day wore on, and the sun moved, the play of shadows on the rocks was just stunning.
And then the sunset as we were coming home. It was like fire in the trees.
Twice this week I’ve had the pleasure of testing out 2 new scallop pies, and I can say this one surpasses pretty well all that have come before it.
Oatlands is approximately halfway between us and Launceston or Mole Creek where we stayed on Wednesday night (see my road trip post) and a much needed stop on our return home.
The weather was wild and we were cold.
The bakery was warm and cosy, the pies and coffee hot and delicious.
There are signs along the highway promoting the pies at this bakery, but not stating their ‘best of’ status. When talking to other travellers you will hear about this bakery and the Ross one is equal terms.
There were two choices of scallop pie on the menu – curry or creamy. I thought this was a good idea as not everyone is after a curry pie, even though mostly are not overly hot or spicy.
I chose the creamy as something different and hubby’s decision made the order two.
Camping ourselves at a table near the wood heater to thaw out and warm up cold wet gloves we started on the coffee in wonderful large mugs easy to cup and warm chilly fingers.
The pies came out and looked fabulous. The cutlery and crockery was all mis-matched which blended nicely with the decor of the cafe. Casual and homely.

Not the best picture, it was browner in the flesh.
The scallops were plump and tasty, and perfectly cooked. Encased in a delicious pastry which was flaky, but not excessive, cooked to perfection with no raw or burnt bits. The sauce was beautiful. A creamy, but not overly rich sauce with fresh herbs (definitely home made as hubby found a whole ‘tree’ of herb in his) that added a subtle fresh home made flavour to it. There was just the right amount without being too runny or thick. The value for money was equally as good, at $7 it is a well rounded pie. I think this will become a favourite stop for us in the future.
