Yep, that’s right. Today, Saturday, is the celebration of my entry into this world some 41 years ago. Right about now I’m feeling every second of it after starting a new exercise regime and finding muscles I’d forgotten existed.
Most of us celebrate birthdays with parties, pampering, crazy life-and-death activities, over indulgence of some kind, spending it with loved ones.
What should I do? What am I going to do?
Well the man is back at work and knowing this would be the case we had a little celebration while he was home – combining it with an early anniversary present. Staying at the hotel we spent our wedding night, and simply chilling with quality us time – no kids anywhere.
It’s going to be pretty low key until later this afternoon. Some baking, go for my daily run and then get ready for a night with the girls.
I have a group of the most amazing friends here, no matter the combination of who’s there we always have a great time. And it usually means there is an over abundance of alcohol partaken. We need no excuse to get together – birthdays, not-saying-goodbye’s, weddings, just because really.
So celebrate with me in whatever way you please, have a great weekend
I made some yoghurt earlier in the week which for some reason doesn’t set the way it should. Weird, because the other I made at the same time set perfectly.
So I decided to see if I could cook with the fruity yoghurt, that was more drinking texture than breakfast food.
I found a lovely little recipe for vanilla cupcakes. Fi girding it won’t be a big change to use berry fruit yoghurt, I went ahead.
They really light and delicious. A berry fruitiness.
Then I had some bananas that needed using. As always.
Not wanting the usual boring banana cupcakes I found a chocolate banana recipe that looked pretty tasty.
Ok, I know it’s Saturday, but this was started yesterday, and we were home too late to get it together last night.
It was a day of food for mum and I yesterday. First up we had Villa Howden High Tea, take two. Read about take one here.
It was beautiful. The coffee was still good, the food gorgeous and the cake mum made for her friends birthday just divine.
Today is dad’s birthday so last night we went out for dinner and a jazz evening.
The cafe we went to regularly has Jazz evenings and last night was big band night.
It was brilliant.
The food as always was beautiful – antipasto platter to start, crusted salmon fillets, scallop pie, chicken pie, crepes, with the best mashed potato, and lovely roasted beetroot and parsnip – dad had tears in his eyes, and hubby organised for them to sing him happy birthday.
No photos of last night because of it was about being in hone moment.
We finished off the night with hot chocolate and coffee while I splashed out and had a liquer cappucino. A dash, of Kahlua was a tasty addition with whipped cream on top.
Big family lunch today, then my house will be full with sister and 3 kids, plus my sister in a law in visiting as well.
Have a good weekend 🙂
It’s dad’s birthday on Saturday and while it’s still only Wednesday, I will be really busy between now and then, so I’m going to bake today.
Two chocolate brownie marshmallow type slices.
Caramel Peanut Squares and Chocolate Cherry Brownies.
The brownies turned out beautifully, very tasty. They would be better if I was able to follow the recipe properly – dark chocolate and real fruit. I used milk chocolate, marshmallows and glacé cherries. No complaints thought, there is definitely nothing wrong with them.
Caramel Peanut Squares.
Yeah, let’s not talk about those. A very tasty un mitigated failure.
I have no idea what went wrong, I did have to laugh when I saw what happened, but, oh, what to do. The caramel was supposed to be on top, mine somehow went all the way to the bottom, so now it’s a caramel chocolate upside down slice. And the caramel has not set, so it can stay in the fridge over night.
I seriously dislike my oven.
Happy Hump day.

I was hoping to arrive home over full from the Morning Tea mum organised at Villa Howden for a group of six of us. Well that is not going to happen. I will post up a collection of photos, the place is still elegant and looks beautiful.
Today’s service was neither beautiful nor elegant. They stuffed up big time.
Mum had been in to see them earlier in there week to arrange the food – which was to include savouries as well as sweets, like of high tea in the morning – and we were to bring the cake for her birthday.
First up, it hadn’t been noted we were going to be in the sitting room rather than at the tables in the dining room.
Tea and coffees ordered, and while we waited two plates of Devonshire tea (scones with jam & cream) were brought out. Must say, the scones were delicious, and the cream, thick and King Island like. (For those who don’t know kind island cream, it is the best super thick cream, perfect for scones and the like, go google it if you want).
And then nothing.
Oh, unless you count housekeeping and the vacuum. The room we were in had a half balcony above, which is where she was, and it was really distracting. And disprespeful. And why couldn’t they have done it before they opened. This was 11.30. Then she decided to vacuum the foyer. Right next to us. One of the ladies went and asked her to stop, and while apologetic, it didn’t seem to sink in how wrong it was.
And then. No more food. Mum went to investigate and was told it hadn’t been written in the book. Mum had dealt with the manager initially. Not happy Jan. (See here)
I think that’s enough of that. Let’s have a look at some pretty pictures.
