Bobbin Head

After a much needed sleep – I didn’t realise just how tired I was until I stopped, having landed in Sydney and was at my brother’s house – and a relaxing morning, we headed north to Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park and Bobbin Head.
The weather was a balmy 29C (10 degrees warmer than home, and it is still Spring) so shorts and thongs were the right combination.

The area is stunning, with a beautiful river flowing through the valley, a marina full of boats we can all be envious of and plenty of room for kids to run around.
A BBQ lunch was packed, along with the sunscreen and swimmers for the kids and so a closely afternoon was spent simply relaxing. Enjoying the view, playing with the kids (I’m somebody’s new soccer partner) and basking in the sunshine.

 

New food at the Market.

Most of you know I am co-coordinator of my local market. Last month we said goodbye to the family who helped make us what we were and supplied the most amazing bbq and cafe. This month we welcome two new foodies to the fray.
A local running the cafe with an incredible menu and a local of Hobart who will be outside on the bbq – which will include his own shop front of home made sauce, relish and mustards.
After perusing these menus I’m already thinking I’m going t have to up my exercise routine – I’m exhausted just looking at the choices and what I will choose. I usually try and buy lunch each month, picking a different item. It’s going to be hard…between soups, salad and pies inside to yummy burgers outside.

Australia Day 2014

Yesterday was Australia Day, Jan 26th. Still a day of contention and BS. I’m not going to comment on any of that.
Each year at Kingston Beach – 30 mins north from us and 10 mins south from Hobart – they have the “Day on the Beach”.
Years ago it was all about the sand sculptures – which were amazing – now it’s a fun day out, beach cricket and volleyball, thong races (inflatable thongs, aka flip flops) with all the food, drinks and  entertainment you can poke a stick at.
Hubby wanted to go along this year and while interested I didn’t the idea of walking for miles after finding a car park. Problem solved.  Five kilometres up the road is the Sports Centre with oodles of parking. Bring in the double decker buses and for a small donation, park and ride with not traffic congestion.
In the end it was just myself and mr 9 who went.
I spent some time at the market along the road (gotta scout for prospective stall holders) while Mr 9 seemed happy to learn volleyball. And that’s where he spent most of the day. I had it easy.
Lots of pictures, met up with hubby and mr 14 who brought the bike for a spin, was sighted by, but missed meeting a fellow blogger and Hobartian (we’ve confirmed it was me she saw), got sunburnt, a long wait for the return bus, and finished off the day with a lovely bbq at my parents.

Food Friday – it’s Christmas!

So here I am again. Finished the last couple,of items on the to do list (I had two or some reason, both saying the same things) and am now chilling. Hubby is chilling with mindless tv (something I’m not fond of) and this is mine.
So I got baking again today. I miss days like this where I get to just play in the kitchen and have something cool to show at the end of it.
What was I baking today? The main plan was the triple layer stuffed-full-of-goodies ice cream cake.
That was fun, soft ice cream, bashing chocolate with the rolling pin and then hoping like hell it will all fit in the pan I had. Only just. A little deeper would have been nice, but I can’t own every pan there is, well, not just yet anyway.
I changed it a little, but the layers go like this, chocolate ice cream with Oreos, vanilla with honeycomb and strawberry withpink with strawberries in sauce. It mixed nicely, and is in the good fridge meaning it will actually be frozen.

As I had to wait 30+ mins in between layers of ice cream I decided I would try something else. A sweet nibble for afterwards with coffee – if we have any room left.
My choice, an easy white Christmas tartlets.
Marshmallows, rice bubbles, coconut and melted chocolate in biscuits/cookies that have been softened and made into tart ‘cases’. Mine are not so cases as plates, but I tried one with the extra topping and it was pretty yummy!

While I was at it, as if I didn’t have enough to do, I figured I should cook the rhubarb I was given during the week. I lurve rhubarb, and it will a tasty extra with my cereal and yoghurt for breakfasts. Rhubarb and apple, rhubarb and strawberries, stewed over ice cream, muffins, inside down cake… anything you can put fruit in really I spose.

Christmas in Australia. Christmas in summer. Some of you wouldn’t be able to envisage it, others have experienced it and now have winter Christmases (something I’d love to do one year), par for the course here. Hot, sticky, maybe wet and windy, but no snow. Although there was one year it was snowy, not the nice kind either.
Anyway, being summer the menu is usually pretty casual. Cold meats, seafood, bbqs. Some people love the whole hot food feast, and who knows what the other half do. We had an exchange student one year, and she was disappointed (and vocally critical) of our set up. There were no fancy Christmas foods, just everyday things. This is true. An a multicultural country we choose what we want to follow, but the climate dictates as well. Some foods we only ever eat at Christmas – like a full ham on the bone, and prawns (but that might just be us).

So what’s on our menu tomorrow. To share what is our typical Christmas meal.

Starters – cheese platter, cabana, stuffed peppers, pear slices and a dip or two. I’m making a pea, mint and feta dip. I found this the other day and it looks scrummy.
Mains – ham (glazed & cooked or sliced cold, we prefer cold) roast turkey breast, prawns au naturale, and a chook.
Then there’s a green salad and maybe another, new potatoes, (re fried with bacon, and boiled), runner & broad beans and snap pea salad. Cranberry, apple and tartare sauces, mustard (a nuts for ham), mayo and vinaigrette.
Desserts (the best bit) – my ice cream cake, trifle, fresh raspberries, a chocolate pudding (so far a rumour, but hubby has fingers crossed), custard and way too much cream (but that always happens doesn’t it?)
Afterwards when we really don’t feel like eating anymore, there’ll be slices of Christmas cake, and my tartlets with coffee (or tea).
Dinner, well, if anyone feels like it, take a pick from what’s left over from the above list.

On the 25th while hubby is fed at work, the kids and I will be at mr 17’s GF’s house. And because he has his licence I can take my bottle of wine. Don’t worry, I rarely get drunk but a few on occasion is nice.

Friday Food – Fair Baking

The plan: chocolate cake and coconut ice + maybe another cake.
The result: one burnt burnt and broken mud cake.
The inside tastes pretty good, but it’s not suitable for School Fair selling or consumption. So we get to eat it. Shame about that.

The plan (take 2, its now Friday, Fair day): Coconut and Raspberry Loaf, Chocolate Fudge Brownie cake and coconut ice. (I’m stuck on this since I decided and I will make it!)
The result: Coconut cake is cooked, with strawberries instead. Smells divine. The brownie cake is in. And the one thing I didn’t get from the supermarket is the one thing you need for coconut ice – copha!! – so a friend will pick some up for me while out. It will be made!

My changes were strawberries instead of raspberries, and made it a cake rather than a loaf.

I doubled the recipe and didn’t quite leave it long enough as it was a little crumbly, but still looked pretty good.

And a few shots of the school early on before the crowds turned up. All those empty spaces – full with lots of happy people with food and drinks and kids with their purchases.
There were horse rides, a jumping castle, the local fire brigade, sushi, Thai food, bbq, milkshakes made by riding a bike, and even Halloween pumpkins.
My dinner consisted of sushi, chicken satay and waffle with ice cream for dessert.
How cool is it to go to school in a place like this?
